Pot Light Installation: Cost, Placement, and Tips
Pot lights make a room feel bigger, brighter, and more modern. They tuck into the ceiling, throw clean even light, and work in almost any space. No wonder they top GTA renovation wish lists.
Before you install them, a little planning goes a long way. Spacing, placement, and the right setup decide whether the room looks great or patchy. Here is what to know about cost, placement, and the install.
What Pot Lights Cost in Ontario
Pot light pricing depends on the number of lights, the ceiling type, and the access. The biggest factor is whether the electrician can reach the ceiling space easily or has to work around a finished ceiling with no attic above.
| Factor | Effect on cost |
|---|---|
| Number of lights | more lights, lower cost per light |
| Attic access above | lowers labour |
| Finished ceiling, no access | raises labour |
| Dimmer and switch work | adds to the total |

Placement and Spacing
Good placement is what separates a clean install from a spotty one. A few simple rules guide it.
The Spacing Rule
A common starting point divides your ceiling height by two to get the spacing between lights. An 8 foot ceiling suggests about 4 feet between lights. This gives even coverage without dark gaps or hot spots. Adjust for the room and the light output.
Distance From Walls
Keep the first row of lights about 1.5 to 3 feet from the walls. Too close and you light the wall instead of the room. Too far and the edges feel dark. For task areas like a kitchen counter, place lights directly above the work surface.
Layering the Light
Pot lights work best as part of a plan, not scattered at random. Think about general lighting for the whole room, task lighting over work zones, and accent lighting for features. A dimmer adds control over the mood.
LED Pot Lights and Dimmers
Almost all new pot lights use LED. They run cool, last for years, and use little power. One catch matters. LED lights need an LED compatible dimmer. Pair them with an old dimmer built for incandescent bulbs and they flicker. If you see that, read our guide on why lights flicker.
Why Use a Licensed Electrician
Pot light installation means cutting into the ceiling and connecting to your wiring. Done wrong, a poor connection in a ceiling overheats where you cannot see it. Each light also adds load, so the circuit has to handle it. A licensed electrician sizes the circuit, makes safe connections, and installs the right housing for insulation contact where needed.
The safety case holds. The Electrical Safety Authority links 143 electrical related fatalities in Ontario between 2015 and 2024, and its 2024 Ontario Electrical Safety Report found that electrical fatalities outside of work rose 40 percent over the past decade.
Patience Cathcart, the ESA Public Safety Officer, said the findings show why safety has to reach beyond job sites, and that the agency stays focused on "educating the public, guiding industry."
In Ontario, the ESA states that a Licensed Electrical Contractor is the only business you can legally hire for this work. We install pot lights through our residential electrical services.
Pot Light FAQ
How far apart should pot lights be?
A common rule divides the ceiling height by two. An 8 foot ceiling suggests about 4 feet between lights. Adjust for the room size and the light output.
How many pot lights do I need in a room?
It depends on room size, ceiling height, and light output. The spacing rule gives a starting count, and an electrician fine tunes it for even coverage.
Why do my pot lights flicker?
Usually an LED light paired with an old dimmer not rated for LED. Use an LED compatible dimmer. If the flicker continues, have the wiring checked.
Can I install pot lights myself?
In Ontario, this work should be done by a Licensed Electrical Contractor. It involves cutting the ceiling, sizing the circuit, and making safe connections you cannot inspect later.
Do pot lights add value to a home?
They can. Clean, modern lighting improves how a room shows and appeals to buyers, especially in kitchens and living areas.
The Bottom Line
Pot lights transform a room when you plan the spacing and use the right LED and dimmer setup. The spacing rule and wall distance give you even light with no dark gaps. Get a licensed electrician to size the circuit and make safe connections, and you get a clean result that lasts.
